The wood of the larger one had been on the ground a long time and is spalted (fungus makes beautiful dark lines; rotten). Spalted wood is hard to work with, but I liked having this guys beard made of rot. I have a great teacher, Jordy Johnson. He is a very cool guy in British Columbia who has a FaceBook page (Carving Fusion) and a YouTube channel.
